Charges for Wheelie bins:

140/240 green and black wheelie bins - £31.00 each.  Depending on stock levels we are able to provide a second hand bin at half price.  The bin will be cleaned before delivery.

If you are in receipt of income-related benefits, this service is subsidised by 50% resulting in a charge of £15.50 for a new bin.

If you wish to exchange a 140ltr bin to a 240ltr bin (or downgrade from a 240ltr to 140ltr) there is a charge of £14.10.

10ltr kitchen caddies - £1.90

25ltr kitchen buckets - £5.70

Please note the bins are the responibility of the resident.  If the bins are lost or stolen it is up to the resident to purchase a replacement Chiltern District Council bin.  When you move house please leave the refuse and recycling containers behind.

The wheeled bins are emptied on an alternate week basis. No side waste will be collected and lids should be closed. Bins should be presented on your boundary by 7AM on your collection day.

Questions and Answers

Why was this scheme introduced?

Over one third of an average dustbin is organic food waste that could be composted. In a time when landfill space is rapidly running out, we need to look at new ways to get rid of our waste.

How was the scheme introduced?

We first introduced the scheme in the Chalfonts area of the district in 2005, and as a result of its success - a reduction of household waste by 40% and over 80% of people saying they preferred the twin bin scheme - we introduced it into the Amersham area.

What happens to our green waste?

All green waste is taken to our in-vessel composting facility based at High Heavens in High Wycombe. Here, it is turned into compost, which is used on local farms and landscaping projects.

I physically cannot manage wheeled bins…

We do operate an assisted list - whereby elderly and disabled people will be given assistance in the collection of their refuse and recycling. Please contact us to discuss this further. I generate too much waste for my green bin.

What else can I do?

For all your Kitchen and garden waste you can buy a home composter at a subsidised rate by calling 08445 71 44 44 or online.
You can also take green garden waste to your local Household Waste and Recycling Centre. Visit Recycle for Buckinghamshire to find out more.

Visit our Love Food Hate Waste campaign to provide tips, advice and recipes for leftovers to help you waste less food.

If you are still concerned about this, please contact us.

I am generating too much waste for my black bin. What can I do?

Recycle as much as possible - use your green waste bin, black paper box and green glass box as much as possible. Also, make the most of your recycling centres for recycling plastic bottles, cans, textiles, shoes and books.

If you have children with nappies, please find out about using real nappies instead.

Visit Recycle for Buckinghamshire to find out more. If you are still concerned about this please contact us.

How can I keep my green bin clean and tidy?

You can wrap any food waste in newspaper before placing in your green wheeled bins. You can also purchase corn starch kitchen caddy and wheeled bin liners from the following outlets:

  • Chalfont Home Stores, 1 Burnham House, Market Place, Chalfont St Peter SL9 9EQ

  • Spar, 23 Rickmansworth Lane, Chalfont Common, Chalfont St Peter SL9 0NA

How can i keep my bin clean?

Follow our tips below to avoid any nasty smells:

  • Don't leave food waste hanging around as it will encourage flies to lay their eggs.

  • Always keep the lid tightly shut on your kitchen caddy and wheeled bins.

  • Always wash your hands immediately after dealing with your food waste, kitchen caddy and wheeled bin.

  • Line the bottom of your wheeled bin with newspaper and/or cardboard - this will keep the base mess free.

  • You can wrap your food waste - especially messy things like chicken carcasses - in newspaper before placing in your green wheeled bin.

  • You can also use paper and corn starch liners in your bin (see below for a list of council approved liner outlets).

  • You can deter flies from your bin by wiping the lid with citronella (not to be used by pregnant ladies). You can also buy citronella wheeled bin fresheners from the Council Offices. Keep wheeled bins out of direct sunlight.

  • Make sure the outside of your bins are clean - as this may also attract unwanted visitors.

If you do find maggots in your kitchen waste you can kill them by pouring boiling water over them. We will still collect your waste should you have maggots. Clean the bin after collection if this is the case.

In exceptionally warm weather, if you are worried about your bins, you can put your food waste in the bin next due to be collected. Please note that food waste placed in your black bin will not be composted.
