Self-Build and Custom Housebuilding Register

As of the 1St April 2016 the Government requires that local councils gauge demand for self-build and custom-build plots in their area by setting up a register.

This register keeps the details of those individuals and groups (known as 'associations') wishing to buy a self or custom build plot in the Council area in order to build their own home(s).

The Register

In the first monitoring period (1st April 2016 to 31st October 2016) the Council received 47 applications to the Register and approved all 47 of these applications. All of the applicants were individuals. 12 of those added on to the register indicated that they had applied to other Local Authority Registers.

Once you are on the Register

At this moment the Council does not have any plots or are aware of any plots available for prospective Self-Builders.

If you are successful and are approved to join the Register the Council may contact you when opportunities for plots meeting your requirements become available. The Council will try to secure plots through site allocations in the Emerging Local Plan in order to meet the demand for plots in the District. You may also seek to acquire plots from other Local Authorities or private companies/individuals.

Please note that the Council does not get involved with civil matters such as the purchase of land between two parties and you would still need to secure planning permission to build on any plots once acquired. More information regarding application advice is available here.
