JANUARY 2004 Hot Weather Episodes

Figures have confirmed that the official Government measure of pollution doubled last year due to hot weather episodes. The government's provisional annual Air Quality Headline Indicator, published today, estimates that there were more than twice as many days of moderate or higher air pollution last year as there were in 2002. High levels of ozone caused by hot, sunny weather in June, July and August when temperatures reached record highs were mainly to blame. A significant amount of the poor air quality was caused by pollution blown into the UK from abroad as well as local sources.

Long-term trends in average concentrations of urban pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, particles, carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide continue to be down.

Further information on the headline indicator is available at http://www.defra.gov.uk/news/2004/040115a.htm
