Business rates - rateable values

Apart from properties that are exempt from Business Rates, each non-domestic property has a rateable value which is normally set by the valuation officers of the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), an agency of the Inland Revenue.

The Rateable Value of your property is shown on the front of your bill. The Council uses the rateable value to work out how much you will have to pay.

You can check your rateable value, and compare it to others, by visiting the VOA website.

The VOA re-assesses the rateable values of all non-domestic properties every five years. The most recent revaluation became effective on the 1st April 2010.

If you think either your rateable value or rating list entry is incorrect, you can make an appeal asking for it to be changed.

As well as the ratepayer, the following people may also make an appeal:

  • The owner of the property
  • A landlord if they have an under lease
  • An agent or rating adviser authorised to act on the rate-payers behalf
