Business rates - information

National Non-Domestic Rates (NNDR), or business rates, are a tax on properties which are not used for domestic purposes (such as shops, factories, offices, pubs). Business Rates are collected by Chiltern District Council on behalf of the government, and are paid into a national pool. This is then redistributed between each council according to the number of people living in the area.

This money, together with revenue from Council Tax payers, the revenue support grant provided by the Government and certain other sums, is used to pay for the services provided by your local authority and other local authorities in your area, such as roads, parks, libraries, and emergency services.

Each year we produce an pdf icon explanatory leaflet [28kb] to accompany the NNDR demand, which provides guidance notes on NNDR.

You can find out more at Business Link, a Government-funded website which contains clear and detailed information on National Non-Domestic Rates.
