Work starts on new Bierton Crematorium, Aylesbury
The Chilterns Crematorium Joint Committee (CCJC) is pleased to announce it is starting work on 20 November building the new crematorium at Bierton, near Aylesbury in Bucks. The crematorium is expected to open in November 2018.
The CCJC was originally granted planning permission in October 2014. This was quashed following a High Court challenge by the Westerleigh Group that has since built a crematorium on a site in Watermead, Aylesbury. The Westerleigh crematorium currently has no planning permission of its own due to a successful High Court challenge brought by Watermead Parish Council.
The Chilterns Crematorium Joint Committee regained its planning permission for the Bierton site in October 2015 but was subjected to a further challenge by the Westerleigh Group; that legal action has been subsequently dropped.
A further, essential, delay was due to the need to carefully move the protected great crested newts that were breeding near the site to a safe place during construction. The new crematorium site will provide an enhanced habitat for the great crested newts to return to and it will also have beautiful parkland grounds which local residents can enjoy.
Local residents also made it very clear that they were concerned about the local roads and the impact a new public facility would have on them. The decision was made to stop up the highway between Rowsham Road and Cane End Lane to ensure that traffic travelling to the new crematorium doesn't come into conflict with local road users including pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders. Now this has been completed, construction work can start on the site.
Cllr Michael Smith, Chairman of the CCJC stated "Despite the delays the CCJC has remained committed to delivering the new facility which we will be calling the Bierton Crematorium. We already provide a very good and well regarded service to residents at the Chilterns Crematorium in Amersham and are looking forward to using these skills and experience to provide services at Bierton. We will be working closely with the local residents during the construction on site."
The CCJC is made up of three local authorities - Aylesbury Vale, Chiltern and Wycombe District Councils. It runs the well-established Chilterns Crematorium in Amersham. www.chilternscrematorium.co.uk
