You can now use plastic bags to line your food waste recycling caddy, such as freezer bags, carrier bags, pedal bin liners and bags that salad, bread and cereal are bought in.
Compostable bags can still be used. You can also wrap your food waste in newspaper, or leave it loose.
Please note, black bin liners, rubble sacks, and hard plastic packaging are still unacceptable.
Why is this happening?
Residents have told us that having to use compostable liners puts them off recycling their food waste. We have been working closely with Bucks County Council and the operators of the food recycling plant, and they are now able to accept other kinds of liners. It is expected that this improvement will help the environment by increasing the amount of food waste recycled.
What happens to the plastic bags?
Machinery separates the bags and liners from the food waste. Those bags and liners are then sent to the energy from waste plant to be turned into electricity. The remaining food waste is processed, creating energy and a rich fertiliser, to be used in agriculture.
