Home Composting
Home composting is a great way of recycling your organic waste at home and is a cheap and easy thing to do. A third of what we bin could be turned into compost.
Why should I compost
If we include organic waste in our general household rubbish and send it to landfill, environmental problems can occur. In landfill, organic matter will decompose without oxygen. This process produces methane, which is well known to be a powerful greenhouse gas and so contributes towards climate change. Once decomposed in the landfill, the organic matter cannot be returned to the agricultural land from where it was first produced, thus possibly contributing to loss of soil health and land degradation.
· Composting cuts the amount of gases produced by landfill sites
· Composting helps reduce the need for new sites for landfill
· Compost is great for the garden
· Compost improves the soil, whatever the soil type
· Compost can be used in place of bought fertilisers, soil-improvers and mulches, thus saving money and resources
· Compost fed soil encourages healthy plants that are more resistant to pests and diseases
You can buy a home composter for all your kitchen and garden waste at a subsidised rate by calling 08445 71 44 44 or online. For more information on composting or becoming a master composter visit Recycle for Buckinghamshire.
Remember you can also take your garden waste to the Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRC's)
