2011 Census of Population
The following text and links are taken from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) 2011 Census of Population web site.
The links give access to the first release of population outputs. Information is provided on the usually resident population at national, regional, county and constituent Local Authority District and Unitary Authority level, by age and sex. The census population estimates are provided by five year age band below national level.
They were published on 16 July 2012. More were published by ONS on 23 November 2012 onwards. Further releases of data is due on 11 December 2012 and 30 January 2013.
The above link goes to remainder of the 1st release of data from the 2011 Census. It gives population and household estimates for ward and output areas and data about the location of second homes. ONS have also produced a set of interactive maps that uses the data. On them you can find out the average age and population density of your area; compare the characteristics of countries, regions, counties and local authority areas. You can also see data about the location of second homes. There is also an interactive pyramid graph showing population characteristics for England and Wales at each census since 1911.
Local Authority quality assurance
A key part of the quality assurance (QA) process was the assessment of the age-sex census population estimates against administrative data and the mid-year population estimates. The 2011 Census QA Pack is an Excel tool that replicates the age-sex charts which were used in the QA assessment of each local authority. The pack also contains the same charts at county level. Downloads for different version of MS Excel are available from Office for National Statistics website.
Buckinghamshire County Council Research Team has produced an initial fact sheet on the first release outputs from the 2011 Census in respect of the county and its districts [Aylesbury Vale, Chiltern, South Bucks and Wycombe]. This is available here [493kb]. In due course the County Council will provide a more detailed analysis of the Census outputs.
Mid-year population estimates are published annually by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). They refer to the estimated population on 30th June of the previous year. They are the official set of population estimates for the United Kingdom and its constituent countries, the regions of England and Wales and local authorities.
