Manure Spreading

In dealing with complaints relating to the spreading of manure or slurry on the land, we follow the informal advice provided by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), which is that 'manure or similar should be ploughed in within 72 hours of it being spread.'

If odour is experienced after this period and its source is identifiable, we can investigate to establish whether it is causing a statutory nuisance. It is accepted that there is a certain degree of odour arising from this activity which may be noticed predominantly in semi rural locations where housing is near to farmland and that usually this will not last longer than the recommended 3 days.
