Why are we extending the Amersham Multi-Storey Car Park?
A capacity survey carried out in June 2016 showed the existing 680-space car park was at full capacity three days a week with demand growing, mainly from commuters travelling into London. The proposed extension is expected to meet that increasing demand until 2036.
It is also anticipated that the extension will increase long-stay parking use at the multi-storey car park, freeing up more short-stay spaces in the Sycamore Road car park closer to the town centre; a potential boost for local businesses.
Work to extend Amersham's Multi-Storey Car Park got underway on Monday 16 October 2017 and is being carried out by contractors Balfour Beatty. The work is expected to be completed in November 2018.
The new building will be positioned over the main body of the surface parking area next to the existing building. There will be five levels within the extension providing a total of 502 extra spaces and include a lift with provision for additional electric car charge points and CCTV.
The existing multi-storey car park is remaining operational throughout the building works, and all efforts are being made to minimise inconvenience to the public while construction is underway. However, there will be times when space at the car park will be restricted.
Season ticket and permit holders have been notified of when this is likely to be with recommendations of where to park if the multi-storey car park is full. Notices have also being posted up in the car park and in the Amersham rail station to ensure casual/occasional users know what is going on and where to park.

Cllr Mike Smith, Chiltern District Council's Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "This represents a multi-million pound investment for Amersham and its surrounding communities at no cost to the local tax payer as the income from the additional parking spaces will pay for the development over time."
"The existing multi-storey car park was built in 1989/90. It has served us well in the intervening years and is still in good shape - it's just not providing the capacity to meet demand any longer. The space is available to extend the existing structure, and that seems to be the best option in practical and financial terms."
